Personal Photo Album of Karel H. G. Bos

About the Photos
Opa Karel Bos architect personal photo album
  • All photos on this page came from this album.

  • The pages have been cropped and the photos resized for easier viewing.

  • Photos that were shown on other pages are not included here.

  • Unfortunately, there were many pages with photos that had been removed. I can only imagine how great those must have been.

  • I don’t have info for most of the photos, but included them anyway, as they were important to my grandfather at one time. (I just love the clothes & hats!)

  • All photos are circa 1920s through early 1930s.

If you have ANY info on any of the photos (even if I don’t know you), please email me so that I may update this page. Thank you!

I remember when my Tante (aunt) Joan came to visit me (for the last time) in California in 2015. It was on this trip that she presented me with this, her father's photo album, and other prized mementos that she had held on to for about 70 years or more. I think she knew that her time was limited (she was 82 and in a lot of pain and discomfort from what turned out to be an advanced stage of bladder cancer.) Otherwise I don't think she could part with any of it yet, although I do know that she trusted me with the family history. (Unfortunately, things got too emotional for her as we were going through this photo album together. Only a handful of the photos were identified and labeled before she needed to take a break. We never finished. The rest of the details are lost, at least for now.)

As with all of her reminiscing and passing family history on to me over the decades, this occasion too, was over food. Sometimes it was over a plate full of nasi or bami goreng. Sometimes over gado-gado (my favorite!) One time she made tjendol/cendol (yum!), as I watched her press the green pandan rice flour mixture through a sieve to make the little raindrop-shaped jellies while she continued to tell me about her childhood memories in Malang.

This particular time she made a snack, it was my all-time childhood favorite: roejak. I cut the mangoes, apples, cucumbers, and whatever other produce that we bought, while she made her usual two separate batches. One bowl for her with enough sambal to make any man cry. The other, a giant bowl with much less sambal, for her "way-too-Americanized" niece.

(It was also on this trip that we went to an Asian market in Sacramento together. She bought an entire jackfruit. We ate it for days. She told me about how when she was a kid in Malang that they used to roast and eat the seeds. She loved her memories of Malang and could never tire of sharing them. Lucky me!)

As with most of my best Indo-family memories, they are often tied to the familiar fragrance of something frying. Food is the tie that strengthens the reminders of those moments. ...Sate and krupuk, anyone?

COBAN RONDO WATERFALL, BATU

Coban Rondo Waterfall is situated in Pujon District, Malang Regency, East Java, located near Batu, East Java. It is an 84-meter-tall waterfall. It's fed by a spring on the slopes of Mount Kawi. Coban Rondo is part of a tiered waterfall system, with Coban Manten and Coban Dudo being upstream sources.

The name "Coban Rondo" translates to "widow's waterfall" and is tied to a local legend about a prince and a woman named Dewi Anjarwati, who became a widow.

BRIDGES

ROLAK SONGO
Lengkong

Thanks to Tri Cahya Metta, the name of the bridge (at least in the very first of the 5 photos) is Rolak Songo Dam in Lengkong, Mojokerto, in East Java. This bridge went under recorded renovations in 1923. Karel Bos would have been just 20 years old at that time, so I am not certain if he was involved with the renovation. Although, it could have been something that helped lead him down the path of architecture if was involved.)

"Rolak Songo" means "Nine Holes"  It is where the Brantas River splits into two branches: the Mas and the Porong.

From Tri Cahya Metta: rolag = water gate, song = 9 (Water gate #1 is behind the ruins.)

It was originally built 1852-1857. The "Nine Holes" refers to its nine sluice gates

Mt. Bromo: Mt. Bromo actually sits inside the massive Tengger caldera, which is about 10km/6mi across, in Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park in East Java. Bromo is one of Indonesia's most active volcanoes, with small eruptions or ash emessions every few years.

The local Tenggerese community are descendants of the Majapahit Kingdom.
